William and Evaline McCaleb Mckenzie

My brick wall has been William MCKENZIE who was born around 1852. The census say he was born in Tennessee. I cannot find him on the 1870 census. He was considered mulatto. The name "William" is very common when researching the McKenzie surname so pinpointing my William and family prior to 1880 has been impossible. Sometime in the 1870s William married Evaline MCCALEB(p)whose parents were Job and Charlotte McCALEB and were living near Chattanooga, TN in 1870. Actually the family seems to have stayed in the area and continuing to live in Harrison, TN.

On William's death certificate it was reported that his father's name was John. I haven't been able to find John either. William was my greatgrandfather who sometime between 1900 and 1910 moved his family to southwestern PA. None of the records that I have found have any information on where William was living prior to 1880. This has been my brick wall for the last 10 years. Any help with these folks would be greatly appreciate. I would love to find out where William and or John were living prior to 1880. I suspect that John might have not been a person of color since my yDNA research shows this line to belong to the I1c haplogroup.

Thanks in advance,

Linda
