Re: bellinger/stansell

Hi,

Usually first names don't change so you will have to do a tedious first name search in the whole state - try looking for one of the children listed in 1880 who would have been alive in 1870 (you may have done this already) - use a wildcard: Per* or Rac* since Perry and Rachel are not common first names

1880 Name Age
Jeff Stansell 46
Silva Stansell 52
Louisa Stansell 19
Rachell Stansell 16
Perry Stansell 14

Cornelia Stansell 10
Bellinger Stansell 6
Lisabeth Stansell 4
Duncan Stansell 4
Joseph Stansell 6M

If all that fails you may assume they were missed in the census and you will have to rely on other records.

It appears that there are two slaves about the correct age for your Jeff on the 1850 slave schedules:

50 Male Black Jos Stansell America, Barnwell, South Carolina
33 Male Black A S Stansell America, Barnwell, South Carolina
25 Female Black Jos Stansell America, Barnwell, South Carolina
25 Male Black Jos Stansell America, Barnwell, South Carolina
23 Male Black Jos Stansell America, Barnwell, South Carolina
20 Female Black Edwin Stansell America, Barnwell, South Carolina
16 Male Black Edwin Stansell America, Barnwell, South Carolina
15 Male Black M R Stansell America, Barnwell, South Carolina
15 Female Black M R Stansell America, Barnwell, South Carolina
11 Female Black Jos Stansell America, Barnwell, South Carolina

I would attempt to find records for Edwin and MR Stansell.

I find it interesting that there are no blacks listed as surname Stansell or any variation in 1870 SC.

Denise
