Re: Holmes family Dekalb County, Georgia
In Response To: Re: Holmes family Dekalb County, Georgia ()
Hi Tony, According to my grandmother, Samuels is her surname. Don't know if Samuels is a married name or not; her son Lewis Sims carries his fathers surname. I'm assuming that Holmes may be her maiden name since Lewis is found in the same household in 1910 as a grandson of Mary Holmes. I've always assumed that Minnie was born around 1875 given the birth year of Lewis. Unfortunately,I never found a Minnie Samuels with her son Lewis Sims, nor have I been able to find Anica Samuels before 1900 or after, so I had to study the records a bit closer. On the 1900 census Minnie Holmes is born 1875, she is widowed,(perhaps this is where the Samuels name is derived) and has 2 children. Mary Holmes is married, has 10 children, 8 living. When I counted the children between 1880,1900, and 1910 the daughter named Sallie seems to have a name change to Minnie on the 1900 census. Tony, I know you asked a simple question. I guess I'm blabbling to make sense of this confusion. I wish Georgia had better records. I need birth records! Are you researching this family?
