Jonas age 18 in 1870 is listed as born MO - which would place the mother in MO in 1852.

In looking at the 1870 census (not the index - but the page) are you sure that is MD? It could be MO. William Devan in 1880 has parents listed as MO. What do the records of the other children say?

Do you have any other records - birth, death, marriage?

I am not dissuading you from pursuing the Alabama Devan's since Mahala is listed as born AL in the 1870 census - but what was her maiden name? Was it mentioned in the marriage papers?
