Devan Family Research
I am trying to determine all the slave owners with the last name of Devan in the 1860 census. I have located Benjamin Devan in Alabama who I believe was the last owner of my ancestor Richard Devan, born 1801 in Maryland however he shows up in Cape Girardeau. MO in 1865 and I am trying to determine how he and his wife Mahala Hill and their 7 children got to Missouri from Alabama. Richard and Mahala show having their married validated in Cape Girardeau, MO by chaplin attached to the freedmens bureau in Aug 1865. It just seems fairly quick that they could travel from Wilcox, County AL to Cape Girardeau, MO so soon after the civil war. Also Richard was 64 and Mahala was 49 at the time and the oldest children was 18? Seems that they were fairly old to have such young children although Joseph (a son) is my GGgrandfather. There was also a Michael Devan, Mulatto, in the 1870 Cape Girardeau census. He would have been approx. 48.
Any assistance finding Devan slaveholders would be appreciated.
