A million thanks Denise! I worked all night trying to fit the pieces of the puzzle together. # 1 -- I need to do an edit to my original post. I left off what I believe to be the first born of WILLIAM/ELIZA CHINN ~ WILLIAM CHINN JR., born @ 1858! Jr. married HESTER LLOYD,I found him living with his wife and her parents in 1880/Rappahannock. Now I have it in my notes to look for their marriage certificate. # 2 I reviewed the 1870 census record for WILLIAM CHINN in Prince William. Your knowledge of the area distances etc. is causing me to lean to this as a REAL possibility. The census said he was a farmer in 1870 and had $1,933!
Could they have been his aunts? How did he get so much money to be a farmer that soon after slavery? Could they have pooled their money and had him to work the land for them? He was 50 years old at the time and could have been perfect for the task. Other Items of Note: WILLIAM CHINN in Prince William was living near the White CHARLES CLARK family, JULIA A. 29 and FLORANCE 7 years. I have been fascinated by the WHITE /CLARK family in Rappahannock, many have names that are identical to our CLARK relatives!I believe, still checking, that they were the original owners of MY CLARK's. I will see if I can make a connection because DELILA CHINN, my great grandmother, married a CLARK from Rappahannock. and There is also a FRIDAY ROBINSON living near WILLIAM CHINN in Prince William. We are related to some ROBINSON's from Rappahannock.
On the 1880 Census, it looks like CAROLINE, wife, age 46, could have been married to him for 9 years or less. In the 1880 census for ELIZABETH CHINN in Rappahannock, she is listed as SINGLE and all of her children were born between 1858 and 1880. Question: In the 1880 census ELIZABETH clearly gave only one child
Maybe it was a mistake? JOHN is also the only child that is identified as "BLACK" but that certainly could have been based on the census taker's observation. Anyway, the more I write down the possibilites, the more I feel it is my WILLIAM CHINN! Let me know if you have any other thoughts and again, MILLIONS of THANKS for all you do for Afrigeneas!
