Re: Rootsweb Message - .costs and thanks

Thanks for your response, and I understand what you are feeling. I think one of the reasons you don't see anyone posting small reminders here is that this topic has been discussed on the main forum - which is where most of the lookups (except for newcomers) used to be done - this was called the Beginners/Getting Started forum and has recently absorbed all lookups that don't get sent to the more specific ones - like slavery, military or FPOC.
Have posted a link to "Costs" of doing genealogy - one of the threads that details the expenses.
The volunteers who do lookups don't begrudge the time, effort and $$$ involved because all of us are committed to the expenses for our own research and are delighted to assist others along the way. We have all been helped here, and on other boards, and by groups like RAOGK.
We also realize that part of the problem is that since the advent of internet research people's expectations of what can be accomplished are too high - the internet can only provide a beginning framework for more serious genealogical work, and that does become quite expensive.
There are days, however, that even the most patient of volunteers get grumpy (grin). After spending 3 or 4 hours at the computer responding to a vague query and finding someone's long lost great great grannie they don't even get a thank-you - just an immediate reply of why didn't you find grannie's mother or dad? Or an automatic rejection of what was found because grannie's name was Serena - and you found Selina
Makes you want to tear your hair out and wonder why you are taking all this time (and money) to do other folks research.
I don't want to exaggerate here either. Nothing is more rewarding than the thousands of heartfelt thanks we do get - everyday. I'm just as happy finding someone else's loved ones as I am finding my own. Sometimes even more so, because this is more like a calling than a hobby.
Again - thank you for posting and I'll see if we can post a gentle reminder from time to time or include it in the body of the text at the top of the page.
