Re: Where Do I Look Now
In Response To: Where Do I Look Now ()
Ancestry is great for some thing....I use it almost every day, and it is wonderful to be able to check census records quickly and easily instead of using microfilm at the library. There are a lot of otehr things to work with, however.
Have you collected death certicates on those in your direct line (and their siblings if they are inexpensive)?
Have you checked local newspaper archives for obituaries? Birth announcements? Engagement/Marriage announcements?
Have you checked for birth records and Marriage records, maybe schoo; records at the county courthouse?
Have you checked with your librarian to see if they could get books about the history of your county on interlibrary loan? When was your county settled? When did the slave-owning families ( with their slaves move in? ) Where did they mostly come from?
Have you checked with the county genealogy and historical societies? Do they have websites? Publications of interest?
Have you checked courthouse records for land sales etc?
Have you checked
to see what records have been microfilmed for your counties and states? You can order them at your local FNC or maybe even the library.
