Re: Joe Surname
In Response To: Re: Joe Surname ()

egt,

What I'm saying is that the name John Joe in the 1860 slave census is mis-spelled. In the 1860 Free census, John Yoe's name is also mis-spelled in the same way but it has been manually corrected as Yoe. I think you have ruled out John Yoe as a slaveholder for your Joe's and I certainly agree but I think there may be a connection to Augustus Yoe, who lived in Benton,AL(later re-named Calhoun,AL) in the 1850 census and in lived in Anderson, TX 1860 and 1870 censuses lived in Palestine, TX. While Augustus Yoe, did not appear to have any slaves, possibly one of his married daughters did. I found a Susan Hunt (b.AL) living with a GW Hunt (b.GA). This Susan matches in age, Susan Yoe, who had previously married a Saml Chadwell (b.TN) (possibly an overseer) but none of these people had any slaves. There are clues here but no answers.
