Re: Joe Surname
In Response To: Joe Surname ()
Looking further at the Yoe family, there does seem to be a good possible connection. The given name is mis-spelled in the 1870 census. The name is actually Augustus Yoe. In the 1860 and 1870 census, Augustus Yoe is listed as a school teacher. While Augustus and his wife Allimira are listed as born in TN, his children are listed as born in AL thru their youngest born in 1851 giving them plenty of time to get to TX for the the birth of the Joe's youngest child. In the 1850 census, Augustus Yoe (listed in the ancestry indeex as Yae) are listed in Benton, AL. Benton, AL was renamed for statesman John Calhoun and became Calhoun, Al by 1860. The same county that listed John Joe (Yoe) as a slaveowner. Still, I did not find any slaves listed as owned by Yoe or any variation in Anderson. Possibly, they had a daughter who married and her family owned slaves in Anderson, TX.
