This website fights me so much whenever I try to post. Hope this gets through.
Bertha's middle name was Mae or May. It's not that much of a stretch (to me) that she would have been listed as "Mary" in 1900. She was fatherless and most likely motherless. Her unidentified mother could have died either in childbirth or shortly thereafter. This left Bertha to be raised by relatives who may or may not have viewed her as a burden. Her grandmother Lucretia/Crecia may have been more loving and caring but when she died, Bertha may have married my Grandpa George, a man more than 25 years her senior, for convenience more than for love. All of his children by his first wife were grown and some of them were even older than she was. I can only wonder how that all played out.
