Re: Writing Letter to Possible Cousin

8) I have done the exact same thing but with a little twist....
1. First on the census I found the name of a professional who lived in a city and state I was familiar with and sent him a introductory letter to his office explaining, who I was and why I was writing him, to his office. This person is a doctor so, I put Personal on the envelope and included a printout bio of his parents with his name and sister genealogy tree. He sent it to his sister. It ended up in his wife's hands and she corresponded to me by email. I do snail mail only. We compared info back and forth. Her family story was a little distorted and she gave me NEW info given down by her deceased mother in law(the doctors mother) that I never heard about a well known white politician. All of this took about a month. And it ended because I could not verify info.
2. Years passed I continued to post info about family individuals on Afrigeneas and a DESCENDANT from this family group just happened to be looking up surnames in the family on the internet. Typed up her granma's name and up popped my info and all of the names in the family group she was familiar group. This doctor I originally had sent the first letter to, happened to be her uncle, her grandma's brother. She contacted me through Afrigeneas. This DESCENDANT is ALSO a very busy professional(not a doctor) and does not keep in close contact with me, (she does annual quarterly emails ;)) but she did verify info I HAD and cleared up information from the first contact I had made PLUS is the only one who has sent me ANY PICTURES from this lost family of cousins. There is a lot more to this story but I will say this here. Sometimes it takes YEARS. But you can't stop. You have to post info about each individual completely, from the last posting to the next and be patient. The right descendant has to be looking and be curious. AND SOMETIMES a perfect stranger from the community may have a picture or see a obituary in the newspaper and send it to you. ALL of these things has happened to me right here on Afrigeneas. PATIENCE. DON'T GIVE UP. ;) Some family members know different parts of a story. Sometimes they just don't want the real information out there. If I were to name names her--it would be very embarassing to some and mean absolutely nothing to anyone else. It was the past. Come to think of it, this doctor may have been passing and whoever opened his mail may have done so and passed the word. But after looking at these pictures..I sort of think there may have been some suspicion there. OH WELL!!
