Re: Markham in TN
In Response To: Markham in TN ()

I did find my research which includes a 1900 census for Civil District 2 of Shelby County which reports my grandmother's (Amy Markham b. Oct.15,1906) mother (Annie Norman 21 ) was married to Andrew Norman (54) b. Dec 1846, listed as head of household. Annie was his second wife at the time. By verbal history we were told that he was a preacher but on the census he's listed as a farmer amd maybe a land owner. The last column of the form, column 28, has the number 71 written. Column 25 of the form has an "R" and column 27 has an "F". The census also reports other children from a previous marriage (Billie Norman b. 1877 age 21., Andrew Norman b. Oct. 1883 age 16., John Henry Norman b. March 1886 age 14., and George Norman b. July 1888 age 11.) Andrew was listed as being born in Tennessee.

I also have dates for my grandmother's mother, Annie Norman.(b. Aug 1878 in Little Rock Arkansas. She died in Gary Indiana on November 14, 1948) She is believed to have re-married, so she could be listed as Annie Weshington, Annie Norman or her maiden name? Annie Chambers. I have a hand written paper that lists her parents as George Chambers (b. Tenn.) and Martha? Chambers (b. Tenn.)

My Grandfather's (Ivory Markham b. April 5,1901) family is listed in the June 19, 1900 12th census of the 12th Civil District in Shelby county Tennessee. There is a listing for living: Wesly Mockmin age 43, a Willie Mockmin age 44, and a Freddie Mockmin age 45. The writing is not clear on my reference copy of that census it does however list as Shelby County, Tenn.. It's not clear in my copy of their relation as example: son, daughter or their birthdate. It may be there I just can't read it on my copy.

I also have a death certificate for what we believe to be one of my grandfather's sisters. Her name was Blanche Markham dated Feb 16 or 18th of 1949. She is listed as being 40 years old at the time. She died in Hardeman county listed near Bolivar City (rural). She had been institutionalized in Western State Hospital. Her birthplace is listed as Tunica Co. Mississippi. Her parents are listed as Wesley Markham and her mother maiden name is listed as Annie Jamerson. The informant is listed as Carl Matthews-(???). His address was listed: "Memphis 3rd St" The funeral director was named as "Hayes and Langston" on 699 on 2nd? Memphis Tenn. Her usual residence is stated as: 690 N. 3rd Street Memhpis-Shelby County.

I hope that this proves to be useful in finding out more information. I'm truly excited to see what becomes of this. Many Thanks, J. Hood
