Connections With Other Researchers

For the past year or so, especially in the last 6 months, I have made some very satisfying connections with other researchers. It is enjoyable exchanging emails and messages with them, but much more enjoyable conversing and sharing with them over the phone.

My latest connection was with someone in TN who used to live in my husband's hometown of Winston-Salem, NC. Their surname matches with my husband's tree are SCALES and JOYCE. They shared a lot of info on a Pinkney Scales who was a minister and co-founder of several Baptist churches in NC. Pictures and more info have been promised to be shared. At first I assumed (incorrectly) that the other researcher might be white and I didn't want to "scare" them off by revealing our AA ethnicity. I still wanted the info from whatever researcher is willing to share. All research is chicken soup to my genealogical soul :D

However, the next email included how Pinkney's wife was a powerful helpmate to him and info on her former slaveowners. This is going to be so interesting to have this info shared with me. I believe the researcher got a lot of the info from Pinkney's CW file or pension file. Don't remember which.

People with the SCALES surname have popped up on the census records and marriage records as being "close" to being relatives of my husband. He said he remembered one of his fav teachers had the surname SCALES. When I told him she may have been a cousin, a big smile came over his face and he said no wonder he liked her so much and she was so helpful to him. That connection has not been found yet.

My husband's maternal gr-gr-grandfather, Ransom JOYCE, might be easier to prove as connected to this other researcher. As an aside, several years ago I had tentatively identified Charlie and Maggie to have been Ransom's parents and resumed my research in an effort to confirm that. I may have found it in the name of one of Ransom's grandchildren. Ransom's son, Robert, had a son named Charlie Ransom JOYCE. I know this is not real confirmation but still glad I found it.

Will share the slaveowner and pictures info about Pinkney JOYCE and his wife, Emma, as soon as I can.
