Still trying to find the parents of Amanda Steploe (as spelled in the 1880 census) She is the niece of my 3rdgreatgrandmother, so as I to assume that her surname is Steploe/Steptoe? She was about 9 years old living with her aunt and uncle. After slavery, another niece, Mary, probably lived with them also, as I found in the Freedman Letters dated 1865, a request from her uncle, my 3rdgreatgrandfather, that he wanted her returned to him as 'he was able to provide for her' Don't know if she ever returned, she was 'bound out' to her last slaveowner. I believe that Mary and Amanda maybe sisters but don't know who their parents could be. Mary was bound out to a Jack Steptoe. What is my next step?
