Our journey began three months ago. A casual phone call to Odessa Taylor Norman aka Aunt Sister Baby (91yrs old), prompted a search of the internet for Dorsey Family Reunion. While Aunt Sister Baby told me to hold on for her to find the information. I told her don't you move, I have the information right here. And at that moment, I saw the majestic smile of Fred Dorsey. It was the eve of an inseparable connection. After a few conversations, Fred and I teamed up on the Dorsey/Taylor Family tree. It was like a new baby had been born. We were both elated and sincere at the chance to discover our roots. The tree yearned for attention and the ancestors called my name. Fred and I found ourselves working unGodly hours and we called each other a dozen times a week.
I started researching our roots only four years ago but the desire intensified on June 6, 2010 at 12:32 am, when I received a reply from halfway around the world in Switzerland. On the other side of an ancestry.com email was another cousin, Carolyn, whom I've never met. Fred and Carolyn's emails have forever changed my life. “With Fred’s wisdom and stories, my innate investigation skills, and Carolyn’s journals authored by cousin Minnie Dunigan and her mother, Margaret Faye Walters, the inaccurate census could not steer us wrong.”
Some of the greatest discoveries have not been written. Who knew Clara Cato was Eddie McClure’s aunt? Eddie McClure is my great grandfather, the same one who married my great grandmother, Georgia Taylor. It was discoveries like that which gave me a natural high! I felt like I was on a magical carpet ride minus the angel dust and bootlegged movies. It is an unexplainable feeling but I am so honored to be able to help keep our ancestors’ legacies alive.
I know Joe Willie Dorsey, Clara Cato, Elias Taylor and all their children are saluting Carolyn and Fred's efforts today. “That darn Fred, he’s always been outspoken and curious now he has found our secrets.” I would like to personally thank Fred Dorsey, Robert Ricks, Carolyn Davenport-Moncel and the Family Reunion Committee for making my dream of a reunion, a reality.
