EMMA F. TOMLIN
ALCOLU -- Emma Franklin Tomlin, 88, widow of Charlie Tomlin Sr., died May 18, 2004, at 1481 Goward Road, Alcolu.
Born in Alcolu, she was a daughter of the late Guy Benjamin Franklin and Lizzie Myers Franklin. She received her education in the Westminister School in Alcolu. She gave her life to Christ and joined Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, where she served faithfully. She was a member of the usher board, senior choir, missionary society and mother of the church. She was also a member of the YMCA Lodge, Joint Stock Lodge, Farmers Aide and Job Lodge. She also ran the Franklin & Tomlin Grocery Store for many years.
Survivors include two sons, Charlie (Althenia) Tomlin Jr. of Alcolu and Thomas (Sarah) Tomlin of New Haven, Conn.; three daughters, Katie (William) Walters of Alcolu, Lizzie Kelly of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Wilhelmenia Tomlin of Norwalk, Conn.; two sisters, Lillie Francis and Queen Monroe, both of Alcolu; two brothers, Robert (Bessie) Blackwell and Alonza (Bertha) Blackwell, both of Sumter; 22 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by eight sisters, two brothers, and two children, Ulysses Franklin and Otis Tomlin.
A wake service will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. today at the Hayes F. Samuels Sr. Memorial Chapel, 114 N. Church St., Manning.
The remains will be placed in the church at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Nebo Baptist Church, Plowden Mill Road, Alcolu, with the Rev. Dennis C. Brock, pastor, officiating, assisted by Pastor Jonathan Anderson, Steven Hodge and Minister Terry Franklin. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
Pallbearers will be grandsons.
Floral Bearers will be granddaughters.
The family will receive friends at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, William and Katie Tomlin Walters, 1481 Goward Road, Alcolu.
Samuels Funeral Home of Manning is in charge of arrangements.
