Re: African Amer. Lucas/Locas Family from Wilson,
In Response To: African Amer. Lucas/Locas Family from Wilson, NC ()
While I don't know of the family in particular that you are looking for, I do have a few LOCUS/LOCUST/LUCAS names in my files who intermarried with mine in the 1800s in North Carolina, and I have helped several people researching their own families with those surnames. They were mostly in Nash & Wake Counties, but I do believe that Nash is where the majority of the Families originated since they are in the early records there; they were never slaves. I also have a few EATMANs in my files, who were mostly whites who married members of the mixed blood communities in Nash Co. As you probably already know, Nash was one of the Counties from which Wilson was formed in 1855.
His research shows they were likely descended from Elizabeth Lucie, a white servant woman in Charles City County, VA in the 1600s, who had a child with a black servant.
