Re: Raphael family,st james parish,louisiana

Elton Oubre has documented some of the families of Vacherie in his book "Vacherie...".
It has been re-released and contains the history of Vacherie (including BACK Vacherie) and some biographical information. I looked at a copy some time ago. It had a 'Jean Pierre Raphael' or a 'Jean Baptiste Raphael', among the first Free persons of color in the area. If this is the same family, you may be able to trace them back through the 1800's via census and court records. Consider ordering through inter-library loan if you don't have access to a copy of Elton's book.

Many of the FPOC in the area, or their relatives, migrated from Orleans parish. Gregory Osborn has traced these fpoc from Orleans, St. John and St. James parishes in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. [Could the OSBORN listed in 1880 be related?]

The New Orleans Public Library contains many references and bios of some of these families. Also, CHERS (Creole Heritage Educ. and Resource Society) is assisting with the genealogy of some of the surnames you mentioned. Check their site for info.
