You should check with the county court house to find out what type of records they have. The reason I suggested chancery court records is that I have found numerous references to (for example) women being fined for having out-of wedlock children - also since mixed-race children were technically illegal - there are also sometimes court proceedings.
FPOC legally had to register in the county they lived in - not all of those records survive - and I am not a Carolina researcher - but the local genealogical society should know if those records are available.
