Re: Lyles in Lancaster Cty SC
In Response To: Re: Lyles in Lancaster Cty SC ()
I am not too familiar with this side of the family. Again, these are supposed to be kin that lived next door to my direct line. I have both the census sheets you mentioned in your response. James and Mary Adams Lyles are listed in the same census records you mentioned, next door to Charlotte and Elizabeth. I believe that James and Elizabeth are brother and sister, but have not been able to prove it yet. I was told that some of the family did own slaves, but most did not. I do not know which ones did or did not, nor have I ever really seen any proof that any did. Just word of mouth from distant relatives. I have checked for birth records, but can not find "Harriet's." I have never heard of the chancery records, free negro register, or bastardy bonds. Where do I find them? Your last statement is what most family members believe... that she was adopted or raised as a servant. Perhaps so, but my gut feeling is telling me different. Thanks for the help.. any help is appreciated.
