Re: MARTIN Baker & Leah Stokes Cnty, NC

Thanks Sandra -- I'll research them over the long Easter weekend (which in France is Saturday to Monday for some reason). The township is indeed Bethania -- the old Moravian settlement. When Forsyth Co. was split off from Stokes, the Bittings were on the Forsyth side (the line literally ran through their property). Most AA Bittings were in Forsyth, then later in Guilford and Yadkin. The latter were some of the 86 people held in 1860 by Joseph Bitting, who is celebrated as a city father in Winston Salem, but who was a notorious slave trader and draft dodger during the Civil War. His daughter married William Neal Reynolds, RJ Reynolds' younger brother, and founded Kate Bittings Reynolds hospital in WS, which used to be the only major hospital for blacks in the region (history here: http://www.pubmedcentral.nih.gov/pagerender.fcgi?artid=2608830&pageindex=1)
