Yes Jay it takes a whole lot of wading through all those names.
That's why I start out with a three star search at Ancestry now, especially if it's a name like JAMES CLARK in PA. That can take hours!
So I start with a 3 stars search and I have been lucky lately.
It may sound like I'm being paid by Ancestry today --- NOT, but they have made some major improvements.
When you do a Search in the Census records now you don't have to click into the entire VIEW IMAGE, now just touch the words and there will be what I call a "peep view." It takes less time and as soon as I see Mother/Father born in VA and familiar names that could be a match and Black or Negro I'll open up the image.
I also try first in the locations that I believe they may live in with their families. I've found several in the 1920 census that were not there the last time I checked.
It's not Science yet but it is much easier to Search.
I also noticed that they have a Free Trial now.
That's great because it isn't cheap!
