Re: Martin in Stokes County, NC
In Response To: Re: Martin in Stokes County, NC ()
Sandra, I'm afraid my reply wasn't very clear. Alexander Martin was a white farmer, born 1807, who in 1860 was living near Danbury with his father Hugh (born 1769) and his sister Sallie (born 1812). At that time he owned 43 people (see list below), including a large number of mulattoes. Based on the ages of people you are interested in, I thought Alexander would be a good candidate for the last slaveholder of Lucinda's family. This is all conjecture, of course, but perhaps the Stokes Co. archives in Danbury could offer some clues. And if Alexander died before 1865, there's a chance his slaves were listed by name in the estate records (which are probably in Raleigh). I wish I could be more helpful, but if I run across your Martins in my research, you'll be the first to know. 1860 Slave Schedule - Alexander Martin
