Re: Stokes County, NC
In Response To: Re: Stokes County, NC ()
Abraham Redman (1762-1835) settled in Stokes County, NC from Louisa Co., VA. He had several enslaved people on his farm, who were distributed through his family. It is not known to me if these people took the Redman name after emancipation. I don't have a lot of information, but I am very interested to hear any oral histories that descendants my have about thier enslaved ancestors. Celia (a girl): In 1833 gifted to daughter Mary Ann wife of Elisha Fulton. Elisha moved to DeKalb Co, TN and then Bollinger, MO. In 1840 TN US Census he had three slaves; two men age 10-24 and one girl age 10-24. Will (a boy): In 1833 gifted to daughter-in-law Catherine (Brown) Redman widow of John Redman. They lived in Stokes Co, NC Nat (a boy): In 1833 gifted to daughter Catherine wife of Bradford Vawter. The Vawters lived in Stokes Co., NC At his death there were four sets of enslaved people, possibly grouped as couples with the gifted children completing the family. Elisha: Jude & Anthony: Given to Samuel & Nancy (Redman) Fulton value $500. Fulton gifted an Anthony in 1854 to his daughter Mary wife of William Gentry and an Anthony Gentry is found in later census records.
