I was reared in Washington, D.C.; I lived in South West, one of the four sections of the Nations Capitol. Now, back then many of the number runners did not really hide anywhere, and folks knew who they were, probably the cops did too, but usually waited til something happened before they would arrest him. Da Man sometimes would come to the Black barbershops, sit himself down in a chair, and there he would get his numbers going. Oh what about the sweet and nice lady who gave money to the church, probably had a nice hair business, and sometimes in this case ran a somewhat of a business in the back of the hair salon. As I look back I have to laugh. Sure most things were bad, but what can I say? Folks did all soughts of things to survive. Joseph
