Sounds like we come from that same age group. I know about that guy who came through the hood shouting out almost in rhythmic tones "Red to the rind...Got Watermelon right on Time" He also sold fish that sat sometimes on top of the ice. Ladies of the hood running outside to meet him. Now let me ask you this one: What about the DGS? District Grocery Stores in Washington, D.C. were like the Mom and Pop stores today; it was usually operated by a Jewish entrepreneur, and I remember my momma like most folks in the hood would do, was to go in there and buy things, and the guy would take out a book of yellow pages and write the items down, and my momma could pay later. That went on for awhile, until my mother got this raise and paid him off, and the guy almost cried like a baby for her to put herself back on the credit. Those were some crazy days.
