Re: Setting Forum Board Standards

True, dear Potter, true!

Some people believe "rules were made to be broken". People break the Ten Commandments and exceed the speed limit everyday...but not without suffering consequences!!

I agree that "Discuss" standards can be semantically circumvented and we do need refinement in the monitoring. But many websites that I visit still set the parameters for posts in very clear and concise terms...so when a person's message gets "zapped"...they cannot say they haven't been forewarned.

One website I visit has a built in computer monitor that just does not allow certain words to get by...even when you do not use the words in the context of a personal attack...the words still don't get by. For example, use of words like "stupid" or "crazy" in a completely innocent context will prevent your message from ever being posted. It can be frustrating to the poster sometimes but it minimizes hostility and personal attack. Yet,there are many wonderful threads on the website where people have freely, thoroughly and intelligently discussed and debated controversial topics. When a person gets "so many points" for violating the website rules, the person is blocked and cannot post messages anymore. A fair warning system is in place.

We can have controversy, intellectual debate and diverse opinions without resort to personal attacks, group defamation and most of all, "race-baiting."

I respect you also.

Vitriolic
