Just because the men were executed doesn't mean they were guilty.
If they were guilty, the crime did not warrant execution.
If they were guilty, NOBODY else should have been punished.
My mother always told me that if a person is truthful, they have very few words to use in their explanation of an event. However, a LIAR invariably uses lots and lots of words in an attempt to make their version sound convincing.
