This is an interesting topic. I have had this same problem. The way I handle it was I included them in the history, on the pedigree chart I drew another branch or link to the side with a notation. Not to include these people would be a shame. They are family in the spirit sense of meaning if not by blood, as a matter of fact they are closer to use than some of the blood relatives. Also, when I did research on them I found a couple of links to my family not on my paternal side but on my maternal side. Also, the research gave a view into the life and care that that generation had for each other. Why should you deny someone who may have been there for everything, they are gateways to our past also.
Just my way of not leaving any stone unturned.
