Have you looked at the South Carolina Death Index? It's online from about 1910-1950's. Download their software and you see the same index the clerks look at!

Here's what I saw for Lancaster County:

Walter Witherspoon, Jr.

County: Lancaster
Sex: male
Color: Black
Death: 8/25/43
Age 70.3

There's also a 54 year old Willie Witherspoon who died at 54 in 1938 and Willie E. Witherspoon who died at 51 in the 30's both in Lancaster COunty.
