He was born John Jordan O'Neil, Jr., on November 13, 1911, in Carrabelle, Florida. His grandfather was pure Mandingo who was taken on a slave ship to America as a little boy who was given the name Julius and took the last name of the man who owned him. When he was freed he moved to southern Georgia where John Jordan O'Neil was born.
