While researching something else, I saw this book review online and exceprted part of it:
WAS RIGHT ON TIME
by Buck O'Neil, Steve Wulf & David Conrads
His name is Buck O'Neil, he played and coached baseball. But he played the game i the barnstorming days of all-black teams. A sad time in America when a person was judged by the color of their skin and not by their humanity. This is his story. He was born John Jordan O'Neil, Jr., on November 13, 1911, in Carrabelle, Florida. His grandfather was pure Mandingo who was taken on a slave ship to America as a little boy who was given the name Julius and took the last name of the man who owned him. When he was freed he moved to southern Georgia where John Jordan O'Neil was born.
