I'd like to make another suggestion that has to do with coupons.
Many years ago someone posted a request, here on Afrigeneas, to collect coupons of all sorts from any source and mail them to a soldiers family. The purpose of this is many families do not have the funds to feed and clothe a growing family of children. You need to have some rank to be able to feed, clothe and live comfortably. The Post grocery store IS NOT a discount store for the military. You can get products needed -but you don't pay tax on it. Families try to buy from the locals, but many treat the military as a gold mine of money. Prices can be very high. So IF you don't have a lot of rank, IF the parents don't both have a job of some sort, IF one of their family at home doesn't send care packages, IF you have no other choice but to make do the best you can--some of them have to request food stamps of a sort and that isn't much. So send those expired coupons by the big envelope full to a family so they can get the discount deducted on purchases at the Post Exchange Grocery store. What do they need. Don't worry about it, clip and send it. At the time coupons that were slightly expired were accepted at the military stores. I am not sure about that now.
It just so happened the person who posted this request many years ago had a family member who went to the commanding officer of the area and they set up coupons in cooperation with the Post Store to have them available for shoppers.
At my job section daily, folks were bringing in coupons, they cut out of magazines and newspaper. We all put in funds to mail them. Your postage can be used as a tax right off.
Help our soldiers families.
Oh yes one other thing, if you have different ideas to put together new recipes from what might be in a persons leftovers, send it. I saw something of this sort in a guidepost magazine and it is something I think I will try.
