His name was Viro Small - more famously known as "Black Sam of Vermont." He was likely the first black man to make a living as a professional wrestler in the United States. His story is really fascinating. I'm a film student, and late last year I won some funds to produce a historical documentary on his life. So far, during the research phase, I've dug up a lot of long-since buried info, some truly incredible life events, but his death date and final resting place remain elusive (despite his one-time fame)....

In 1910, he lived on Minetta St. in Manhattan with a wife half his age - Sadie - and her mother. No children. I believe Sadie's maiden name to have been Leppion. She similarly disappears after the 1910 census.
