Margaret Slater Inge, 82, of Denver, N.Y. and Detroit, Mich., died Friday, May 1, 2009 at the home of her daughter where she had lived since September 2008. She was born July 26, 1926 in Milledgeville, Georgia, the daughter of Richard Peter and Essie Mae (Edwards) Slater.
Margaret was very active in her sorority, Delta Sigma Theta, conducted historical research for numerous organizations and otherwise supported many not-for-profit organizations. Gardening was a source of endless happiness in her life.
She was a Civil Rights pioneer and a 30-year cancer survivor.
Surviving are three loving children, Margaret S. Inge, George P. Inge IV and Andrea Lorraine Inge; four sisters, Florence Johnson, Harriet Jones, Mamie Harmon and Petronia Tucker; in-laws, Mattie Kelsey, Herbert Jones, Abelard Harmon and Andrew Tucker. Also surviving are numerous cousins, nieces and nephews and their children.
She was predeceased by her husband, George P. Inge III, MD.
A memorial tree planting service will be held at a later date.
In memory of Margaret Slater Inge donations may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice.
