I saw the movie 12 Years A Slave and found it to be stunning. Interestingly, I have never heard a Jew say that they didn't want to watch Schindler's List or any other such film because the scenes were too brutal or hard to watch. Descendants of the victims of the Holocaust often times implore that those were things that should not be forgotten and are committed to make sure that they are not. Films like 12 Years A Slave depict things that we should not forget and are about atrocities committed against our own. What are we committed to not forgetting? How do we think that we can afford the luxury to just look away from the truth about history?
The book that Northrup wrote is much more brutal than the film and the book can be read in its entirety for free online thru google books. I think all of us should either see the movie or read the book. None of us can afford the luxury of doing less.
