There were only three white officers in the Confederate Louisiana Native Guards. They were: Colonel Felix Labatut, Lt. Colonel Henry D. Ogden, and Major S. St. Cyr. All of the other officers in the unit, Captain and below were free blacks. Morris W. Morris was a lieutenant. His ancestry included English, Spanish, Jewish, and African. While he may have been able to pass for white, under the "one drop rule" that someone previously pointed out, he would have been considered black at the time.
