It is really interesting that it seems as if those who practiced midwifery were also natural medicine practitioners. My great grandmother's youngest sister, Catherine Cole Gooch, was the midwife for the southwestern Indiana black settlement known as Lyles Station. She was born in 1863 and lived almost 100 yrs, dying in 1957. Like many of the others mentioned here, she was known for being an herbalist and it was often said that there was not a root or an herb she did not know.
