Johanna Baker ~ Midwife
In Response To: Give MidWives a shout! ()

My 3rd great grandmother was born Johanna Baker in 1830 in West Virginia near Abingdon her birthplace was located near the North Fork of the Holston River. At about age 12 years she was sold to David Boyd in Sumter County, AL and taken as a wife to Samuel Smith also enslaved by Boyd at age 13.

At age 14 she was brought to Mississippi still enslaved by Boyd. In order to support herself and her children after the death of her husband and after the Civil War Johanna Baker Smith would practice Medicine and Midwifery among the black and white folks in Ocean Springs, MS. She would along with doctors’ help treat her second husband Harry Blunt a former USCT Infantryman until his death in 1893.

Great-Great-Great-Grandmother Johanna Baker Smith Blunt would continue to practice Medicine and Midwifery until her death in 1902.

During her years as a Midwife a number of girl babies were given the name Johanna including one of her granddaughters.
