I have made three trips to the Family History Library, though it has been about ten years since my last visit. You will find that there are many volunteers staffing help desks throughout the facility and they all have varying degrees of knowledge on items of particular interest to African-American research. If you have problems getting detailed and helpful information from one person, take your question/s on to another clerk. You may then find someone who has a better grasp of what you are needing help with.
