The surprise for me was that they were recording these things even while the Civil War was still going on. I had no idea that there were any people in higher up offices in the Southern States who were interested in how the slaves were being treated, or their well-being, nor records that slaves were actually involved in spying missions. This document has some really interesting cases and as you said, it's good reading and one needs some time to go through all of these cases.
