Benjamin "Pap" Singleton Burial Place Found

This month the burial place of Benjamin "Pap" Singleton, known as "the Father of the Exodusters" and "The Black Moses," was finally found.

For years it has been wrongly reported in books, articles and documentaries that he had died in St. Louis, MO in 1892. That is until 2010 when a death notice was found in the Kansas City Star proving that he actually died in Kansas City, MO on 17 February 1900.

But, there was no mention of his burial place.

So two persistent Kansas genealogists spent 18 months contacting cemeteries and funeral homes until they found the mortuary record that finally proved that Benjamin Singleton was buried on 26 February 1900 in Union Cemetery, Kansas City, MO.

Now plans are being made to obtain a grave marker for Singleton's grave. And research continues about his life.

Questions still to answer: How many children did Singleton have? What were their names? What was his wife's name? Are there any descendants alive today?

For more information about Singleton and the search for his resting place see the Kansas City Star article below:
