Thanks Pat. My great grandfather adopted the surname "Jones." It appears his mother continued using the surname Cooney, since her son indicated that was her surname on his marriage license application. Unfortunately, it is the only record I have of my great great grand-mother's existence as she appears on no census in either Tennessee or Indiana, where she died. I've searched for her with the surnames Cooney, Coney and Cooley. T. Cooley was a slave owner in Dresden, Weakley county, Tennessee and one day I may search those slave records and see if I can find her. A new project for 2013.
