Well, I made a find in 2013, which frankly turned out to be an embarrassment. My family has always known that a maternal great grandfather was born and enslaved in Tennessee, until he was 5, when the Civil War ended. He told his children that he and his mother were enslaved by the "Cooney" family. We never knew, however, where in Tennessee, they were enslaved. In looking again at family documents, after the first of the year, I stumbled across my great grandparents' Illinois marriage license application and noticed in small print, in the corner, that it indicated he stated on the application that he was born in Dresden (Weakley county), Tennessee. I've only had the document for 5 years, and had never noticed before that his birthplace was on it. Quite embarrassing having to explain that one to my family. The good news is they were excited to finally find out where he came from.
