Encyclopedia article about Robert Benham, the first African American chief justice of the Supreme Court of Georgia, also made history both as the first African American to establish a law practice in his hometown of Cartresville and as the first African American to sit on the Georgia State Court of Appeals. Benham attended Summer Hill High School, Tuskegee University in Tuskegee, Alabama, Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the University of Georgia School of Law. He also was a captain in the U.S. Army Reserve.
