The show focused on multi-racial students and their mentors, who have faced racial identity issues within the black community or their multi-racial households. O’Brien, whose parents are from Cuba and Australia, respectively, identifies herself as African American. She interviews two young girls, Nayo Jones and Becca Khalil, who have conflicting views of what it means to be African American.

Nayo was born to an African American mother and Caucasian father, who separated early in the young girl’s life. Nayo and her younger sister were raised by their father, resulting in Nayo’s conflicts with identity. “I don’t really feel black,” said Nayo. “I feel like it’s a part of me, but I just don’t feel black.”
