Re: Georgia State Archives Open or Closed?
In Response To: Georgia State Archives Open or Closed? ()
Elizabeth Olson from the GA Genealogical Society gave us an update at our AAHGS meeting this morning. As of today, the GA Archives is still slated to be closed to the public effective Nov. 1. Seven of the ten remaining employees will lose their jobs, and the GA Archives will have only 3 employees. At the Archives Month Proclamation this past Wednesday at the state capitol, Gov. Nathan Deal said to a group of nearly 100 people, "I will keep the Archives open." I heard him clearly. From what we understand, he has placed blame on the Secretary of State Brian Kemp, and he has stated that he has no jurisdiction over Kemp's decision. There has not been anything in writing stating that the state of GA will keep the GA Archives open.
Many feel that even when/if the GA Archives go by appointment only, there's no way that 3 employees (director, asst. director/archivist, and building manager) will be able to handle appointments AND maintain the other Archives duties that are mandated by law.
