I have been researching in city directories for a long time, and abbreviations are often listed in city directory indexes and are usually found just before the listings of residents begins.

Many of my maternal ancestors were from Fayetteville, NC. For me, an added bonus is that many Fayetteville directories also include a history of the city in addition to the business and residential listings. The descriptions of what the city was like is very informatitive and interesting to me.
