I believe the lower case "r" found in City Directories following a person's name means "residence". The address given is usually the residence of the listed person regardless of their renting or owning the property, frequently it is listed as (res). And often the spouse of the listed person is included. ex. Arthur L. Thomas (Anita) r 123 anystreet
