Re: Verifying Sources
In Response To: Re: Verifying Sources ()
Toot, The only son of my paternal gggrandfather, Samuel Smith was named Calvin (b. 1870) but appears on the 1880 census in Veasey (Drew County) Arkansas as "Bud." My paternal grandfather, in the same Arkansas city and county, had a half-sister, who everyone called "Pete." We knew her, all of our lives, as Aunt Pete. We were told she was given the name for her grandfather, Peter Goode. The story was that she was his youngest and favorite grandchild, and she was rarely seen outside his presence. They said she followed him around like a little duck and that when she was young she was actually called, Little Pete. It wasn't until I researched, long after her death, that I learned she was actually named Annie. I imagine there were few instances were little girls were given male nicknames.
